On 19th August 1937, 11th BS Cmdr. Gong Yin-cheng and 9th BS Cmdr. Xie Yu-ching from the 2nd BG, each led 7 Northrop Gamma 2Es to depart from Guangde at 0900 hours and 0940 hours respectively en route to Yushan at the mouth of the Yantze River to bomb hostile carriers and vessels at Bai’long Harbor. Chen Xi-chun and Flight Leader Shen Tsong-hwei flew Northrop Gamma 2E #904 in the formation, and encountered mechanical failures. Their plane was churning out smoke on its tail, and gradually flying away from the formation. While flying over Bai’long Harbor, they saw a flotilla of hostile vessels, and decided to apply max power to dive toward one of them from 2,000 m high. They both perished with the vessel during the impact on its ammo storage, which caused a huge explosion and tilted the vessel.
