General Tang Fei, the 12th Commander-in-Chief (term of office: October 1, 1992 to July 1, 1995)
General Tang is a native of Jiangsu Province, and was born in Taicang County in March 1932. He was a child of wisdom and strongly aspired to aviation and hoped to fly in the sky on day. He enrolled in the Air Force Preparatory School after graduation from secondary school, and graduated from the class of the 6th Term of the Air Force Preparatory School, the class of the 32nd Term of the Air Force Academy, the squadron class of the 29th Term of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the class of the 1972 of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the class of 1979 of the War College at the Joint Forces University. General Tang dedicated to the ROCAF for more than 4 decades with outstanding performance and was highly decorated. He was a well-educated person with integrity and magnanimity, and was respected by all of the force.
General Tang was decorated with 35 medals and awards including the 4th Class Cauldron Medal, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Class of Sky Command, Loyalty and Service, Great Harmony Medal, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class Rejuvenation Medal, Dashing Eagle, Dragon on the Cloud, Flying Tiger, Sky Leopold, Rapacious Condor, Crimson Bow, Power Declaration, Distinguished Service, Model, and the Star of South Africa.
General Tang spared no effort in seeking better benefits and livelihood for the soldiers ever since his assumption of office as the Commander-in-Chief. He has foresight about all the planning for exercise drill and training, and related codes. In assessing the threat from the enemy, General Tang mapped out a proper strategy to respond and the guidelines for all military units to follow. This was also the time that a new generation of combat aircrafts was introduced. General Tang administered the deployment of the new generation of combat aircrafts with detailed planning in line with the new strategy to allow for a smooth transition of military installation upgrade.
General Tang performed his duties efficiently with caution and helped to realize the advancement of the ROCAF, and is famed as a scholar-soldier highly recommended by senior officials of all levels. He was appointed as the Joint Chief of the General Staff on February 1, 1998, and Minister of National Defense on March 1, 1999, then to the civilian position as the Premier of the Republic of China on May 20, 2000.
