[Commemorating the 88th Anniversary of the Victory at the Battle of Jianqiao] Gen. Cheng Commends Model Service Members, Urges Continued Excellence in the Service of the Nation

2025/08/15

The Air Force Command Headquarters organized a commendation ceremony honoring model service members in commemoration of the 88th Anniversary of the victory at the Battle of Jianqiao.

ROCAF Chief Gen. Cheng urged all service members to safeguard peace by faithfully fulfilling their duties and upholding the ROCAF’s legacy.

To commemorate the 88th Anniversary of the ROCAF’s victory at the Battle of the Jianqiao (also known as the “814 Aerial War”), the Air Force Command Headquarters held a ceremony on August 14 that honored model service members and celebrated the victory’s 88th Anniversary. The ceremony commended recipients of the Order of Loyalty and Diligence, along with service members commended for outstanding performance in flight security, air defense, and combat control, as well as 19 other duties. In addition, units that had excelled in physical competitions were also commended. The ceremony recognized their dedication to duty and unwavering commitment to national defense.

With the Jianqiao Spirit close to our hearts, we safeguard peace by preparing for war.

The ceremony was held on August 14 at Zhongyong Base and was presided over by ROCAF Chief Gen. Cheng. Vice Chief of the Air Force Lt. Gen. Wang, along with several other important officers, was also present. Congratulatory remarks from the Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo were first read aloud, followed by the presentation of awards to 2025 model service members, winners of the Zhongyong Cup, and units recognized for excellent performance — honoring their dedication and commitment to duty.

Gen. Cheng noted that when the Battle of Jianqiao erupted over the skies of Jianqiao Air Base in 1937, Commander Gao Zhihang successfully led Chinese forces in repelling the Japanese invaders against overwhelming odds, marking the ROCAF’s first aerial victory. In a time when morale was low amid frequent invasions, this victory not only inspired the nation to fight back, but also forged the Jianqiao Spirit — “No enemy remains where I am, no challenge too great, no foe too many, no threat too strong”. Gen. Cheng noted that in the face of uncertainty and challenges, we must remain strong and unwavering in the defense of the nation. Gen. Cheng encouraged all service members to remember their glorious legacy, noting that peace could only be achieved by preparing for war, thereby ensuring the triumph of liberty and democracy.

Improving expertise and foreign language skills

Gen. Cheng urged all service members to seek excellence by honing their skillsets, encouraging them to use time wisely to enhance both their expertise and image. In addition, he highlighted how foreign languages are an important tool for broadening horizons. Therefore, he encouraged them to try learning new languages in preparation for the future. Last but not least, Gen. Cheng reminded everyone that, as service members, their priorities are maintaining discipline and faithfully fulfilling their duties.
