On August 14 (also known as “814 Day” or Air Force Day), the Air Force Command Headquarters organized multiple events in honor of the ROCAF’s 87th anniversary of its first aerial victory over Japan. The day featured events recognizing excellence in 19 fields, including flight security, air defense, and operational command, and also celebrated units that had won sports competitions. These events acknowledge the dedication and efforts of all service members, who have persisted in learning and honing their skills to defend the nation and its skies.
Recognizing Excellence and Winners of Sports Competitions
The ROCAF organized a ceremony at Zhongyong Base on August 14, the ROCAF’s 87th anniversary of its first aerial victory over Japan, to recognize the outstanding achievements of its personnel. This ceremony was presided over by ROCAF Chief Gen. Liu Jen-yuan and attended by Deputy Commanding General Lt. Gen. Huang Chih-wei and other military representatives. Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo first delivered the opening remarks. This was followed by the presentation of awards to model officers and soldiers, winners of the Zhongyong Sports games, and service members for excellence service in 2024. This ceremony commended service members for their efforts, achievements, and commitment.
Gen. Liu said that the ROCAF’s glorious history was made possible by the sacrifice and selflessness of numerous heroes. Most notably, Commander Kao Chih-hang took to the skies on August 14, 1937, and despite being heavily outnumbered by Japanese forces, managed to score the ROCAF’s first aerial victory. This victory boosted the nation’s morale and confidence in the war against Japan.
Gen. Liu Urged Personnel to Prepare for All Possibilities
As China steps up its grey-zone warfare against Taiwan in recent years, ROCAF Chief Gen. Liu Jen-yuan urged personnel to remain true to the service’s values of loyalty and bravery, and to try their utmost in their training and combat preparations. As multiple new weapons and equipment enter service in the future, the ROCAF will become even more capable and confident in its mission to defend Taiwan.
Furthermore, TSgt Fang, a deputy chief in air defense and the recipient of the armed forces’ award for excellence in air defense, expressed that his unit was responsible for defending the skies of Taiwan’s northern region 24 hours a day. TSgt Fang stated the importance of leading by example when in the position of a leader. By strengthening the effectiveness of a unit’s training, a unit will be able to monitor all aerial activities and respond immediately if a threat arises.
