History and development of the 7th Flight Training Wing

Formerly the “Air Force Training Center” the wing was ordered to establish on April 1, 1972, and was coded as “Air Force Taitung Command” on January 16, 1978. In responding to the need in combat, the wing was expanded and named “Air Force 737th Tactical Wing” on November 1 of the year. On January 1, 1984, the 46th Squadron under the 7th Wing was ordered to reorganized as the “Air Force 46th Tactical Combat Squadron” under the command of the wing and assigned the duty of training the teaching faculties of the Air Force in bombing and firing both in theory and practice. This move helped to combine academic study in school and practical training of the force so as to train and develop outstanding air force officers.

The Tactic Center was introduced on July 1, 1988, with the 46th Squadron and the ACMI under it command. The center is responsible for the training of pilots graduated from the Air Force Academy in combat and also the professional skills in tactics and combat of the air force, the training of teaching faculties in academic discipline and the rotation of training of all combat units in combat skills. It was also assigned with the mission of patrolling the air space off the coast of east Taiwan. The wing supports the development of eastern Taiwan and makes all effort to gear up for combat readiness.

We were assigned to the command of the “Education, Training and Doctrine Development Command” on July 1, 1998, and was under the direct command of the “Air Force General Command Headquarters” on July 1, 2005. The “Tactical Training Center” was assigned to the command of the “Education, Training and Doctrine Development Command” and the 46th Squadron was assigned to the command of the 7th Wing at the same time.

The “Air Force Training Center” used T-33 and T-86 in 1972, and was replaced by F-5A and F 5-B in July 1977, the F-5E on January 1981, and the F-5F in November 1981, which is still in service. This unit is now responsible for the training of the students from combat branch of the academy in the use of the F-5E/F in different combat duties, exercise drills, and related training. The contribution to the training of teaching faculties in the training of new pilots in combat readiness, bombing and precision firing is obvious.
