Weather Wing

Last Updated Time:2008/05/14

In 1921, the Weather Branch under the Aviation Department of the Aviation Bureau was set up, which was the first weather unit of the Air Force. In 1926, the branch was reorganized to be subordinate to the Air Transport Management Department of the Aviation Administration. In Sept. 1929, the administration set up the Aviation Meteorological Office under the Communication Squadron of the Nanjin Aviation Class. In May 1934, the Aviation Committee renamed the office the 1st Meteorological Office and set up the 2nd Meteorological Office in the Central Aviation School in Jianchiao, Hangzhao. The 3rd Meteorological Office was set up in Nanchien Air Station in Jiangxi Province.

On January 1, 1939, the above three offices were dismissed to establish the Weather General Agency, stationed at the Jiangbei Park, Chunching. It was relocated to Chengdu in February and reorganized to be the Weather General Squadron on January 1, 1947, stationed in Nanjing in 1947, which with 130 weather stations was directly subordinate to the ROC GHQ. 5 Weather Groups at Shengyang, Beiping, Xian, Hanko, and Chungching was established in February of the same year. Another weather squadron was established in Taiwan. In August of the same year, all the weather squadrons were instructed to be subordinate to each command of military region where they were stationed. The weather stations of each echelon were also changed to be managed by each local military unit or air station. The Weather General Group became the unit that was only in charge of providing necessary technical guidance and support.

In the late 1948, the Weather General Group was moved to Taiwan stationed at the present location, Danshui, Taipei County. Its sub-units soon followed. In 1951, all the weather stations were again realigned to be subordinate to the Weather General Group. On December 1, 1954, the general group was reorganized to the Weather Wing, directly subordinate to the Air Force GHQ. On February 1, 1991, the Weather Wing was reassigned to be a sub-unit of the Combat Air Command. On March 1, 2006, the command was renamed the Air Force Combat Air Command.
